Date-stamped : 31 May94 - 14:26 CC : LANCASHIRE v SOMERSET, Southport, 26-30 May 94 ====> Day 3, 28 May 94 Wasim Akram produced an explosive display at Southport to put Lancashire in sight of their first Championship win of the sea- son. The Pakistani star followed up a five-wicket haul in the first innings by grabbing three for 21 when Somerset followed on 248 behind. Somerset finished in desperate trouble at 136 for five and it looks odds-on that they will slip to their fourth Championship defeat on the trot, presenting an early crisis for new captain Andy Hayhurst. Wasim, who is due to link up with Pakistan for the tour of Sri Lanka in a month, is determined to cause as much damage as possible in the meantime. After his five for 117 in the first innings, he shocked Somerset by ripping out Hayhurst and Keith Parsons in successive balls after they had al- ready lost their first three wickets. Richard Harden denied him the hat-trick but there seems little hope for Somerset on the fi- nal day. Mark Lathwell provided their only resistance, racing to a half-century with ten fours in 64 balls but he fell for 61 to left-arm spinner Alex Barnett. Wasim gave his Pakistan team mate Mushtaq a hot reception with a series of bumpers. Mushtaq ducked out of the way only to be hit on the helmet by a ball from Peter Martin which exploded off the deteriorating surface. Luckily Mushtaq was unhurt and unleashed a string of superb cover drives which earned him 36 before he top edged Mike Watkinson to midwicket. Somerset slipped to 207 for eight when Martin shattered Harvey Trump's stumps and Turner, who had been to hospital for a check returned to link up with Graham Rose who was on 45. Lead: Wasim Akram bagged four for 82 to put Lancashire in sight of their first championship win of the season at Southport today. Somerset, needing 372 to avoid the follow on, stumbled to 210 for eight at lunch. (Taken from a Press Association News Report) Contributed by Vicky (VIGNESWA@*umass.edu)
