Date-stamped : 15 Jan95 - 18:39 West Indies v Sir Ron Brierly's XI, One-day Match played at Whangarei, 15 January 1995 Stuart Williams and Sherwin Campbell started the West Indies tour of New Zealand with centuries in a comfortable win over a select XI including former Australian test great Jeff Thomson. They were up against the Sir Ron Brierly XI, which also had oldies like former New Zealand captain John Wright and New Zealand allrounder Lance Cairns. Thomson did not work up the pace that once gained him the nickname "Thommo the Terrible" and ended the match with figures of 37-0 off eight overs. But it was mainly in- tended as a fun match. The rest of Sir Ron`s team comprised promising young players and few more who have been seen recently in the national team, like spinner Dipak Patel. For the record, Williams and Campbell put on an excellent first wicket stand of 237. West Indies scored 273-3 off their 50 overs. After making sure their op- ponents were not going to win, the West Indies offered some generous bowling which gave the batsmen opportunities to make bit hits. But the tourists did not let things get out of hand and won by 41 runs. The first serious game of the tour is scheduled for Tuesday when the West Indies play Auckland.
