Date-stamped : 24 Oct94 - 18:42 3 Nation One-day Tournament Australia v Pakistan, Rawalpindi, 22 October 1994 Pakistan scored a magnificient victory over Australia in the 1- day match at pindi. Australia had scored 250/6 in their 50 overs and Pakistan`s chances of winning looked slim. However, they started with a bang, Saeed Anwar on-driving McDermott`s first ball for 4. At the end of 8 overs, score was 34/0 with Saeed and Aamir Sohail going well, both hitting a six each. Then Aamir really lambasted McDermott for 3 consecutive 4`s; a lazy cover drive, an elegant leg-glance, and a ferocious hook in front of square. At the end of 12 overs, score 84/0. Then Aamir, living by the sword perished by it, but not before he had set the pace and stunned Australia by making 45 in 34 balls. Inzamam jauntily strode to the wicket, and although Saeed slowed down, the score kept moving at a reasonable pace, with Inzy after opening his ac- count with a single, lofting Shane high over mid-wicket for a 6. At the end of 20 overs, score 120/1. Inzy and Saeed kept the scoreboard ticking with some glorious strokes, Inzy in particular hitting boundaries to avoid running. At end of 30 overs, 175/1. Saeed reached his century with an on-drive for 4, and then In- zamam became even wilder, hitting shane for 3 consecutive 4s that were breathtaking as regards power and timing, just passing next to fielders at mid-on and mid-off and yet giving them no time to even bend down. As long-on and long-off chased the ball, Inzy scornfully (or lazily) refused to run. Then in the next over he jumped down the wicket and straight drove Mcdermott (their fastest bowler) for 4, following it up next ball with a similar shot from his crease that sizzled past Mcdermott for 4. In the next over he went down the wicket and lofted Tim May for a huge 6; next ball May dropped it short and Inzy savagely pulled it through mid-wicket for 6! Yes 6! - the ball hardly rose above 5 feet in its trajectory and yet carried over the ropes for a 6. Pakistan reached its target of 251 in 39 overs. Saeed 104 not out in 131 balls, Inzy 91 not out in 80 balls. BBC said Pakistan thrashed Australia - Massacre at Pindi. Pakistan team can put up such a glittering performance one day and lose to the weakest team in the world the next, and then beat the best in the world the next day!
