Date-stamped : 28 Feb95 - 10:49 CC 1993 Round 20, 16 - 20 September 1993 LANCS v NORTHANTS: Old Trafford Day 1 - 16 Sep 1993 Lancashire skipper Neil Fairbrother hit his first century for 14 months and his first at Old Trafford for six years. His 110 car- ried Lancashire to 277-8 in 82 overs bad light ending play early with Curtly Ambrose and Paul Taylor sharing the wickets. He raced to his 27th first class century in 175 minutes off 134 balls with a six and 15 fours after Lancashire had slumped to 30 for 3. Day 2 - 17 Sep 1993 Northants hit back at Old Trafford to keep alive their hopes of the Championship runners up prize. They looked in trouble after Wasim Akram bagged 5-63 to reduce them from 104-1 to 240 all out, giving Lancashire a 37 run first innings lead. Lancashire at 56-1 looked likely to pile on the agony but two swift wickets put Northants back in business as the hosts reached 86-3 at the close. Day 3 - 18 Sep 1993 Lancashire produced one of their best performances of the season on the day manager David Hughes resigned. Neil Fairbrother`s side virtually ended Northamptonshire`s hopes of finishing runners up setting a mammoth target of 430 and then claiming an early wick- et. Lancashire declared at 392 for eight thanks to Gary Yates (134 no) and John Crawley (103) before Wasim Akram sent back Alan Fordham for six. Day 4 - 20 Sep 1993 Northamptonshire`s slim hopes of securing runners up spot were wrecked by rain at Old Trafford. Allan Lamb`s side needed to beat Lancashire and even though they faced a target of 430 Rob Bailey and Nigel Felton kept their hopes alive. But after they had added an unbroken 145 Bailey on 71 and Felton 72 rain finally forced the match to be abandoned with the visitors on 161-2.
