Date-stamped : 30 Jan95 - 14:48 CC 1993: SOMERSET v MIDDLESEX, Bath, 17, 18, 19, 21 June 1993 MIDDLESEX WON BY 5 WICKETS Middlesex won with an over to spare, having been set 258 to win on a slow pitch. This followed an incident which ranks as bizarre even by recent (at 1994) standards of pre-declaration County Championship goings-on. Somerset`s last man, van Troost, hit a slow long-hop from the acting Middlesex captain, Carr, straight to Haynes on the boundary. Carr shouted "Drop It!", because he had already agreed with the Somerset captain, Tavare, what the victory target would be. Haynes, however, caught the ball and, although there was no audible appeal, umpire Meyer ruled that van Troost was out. The match had begun with its highest stand, 120, between the Somerset openers Folland and Fletcher. After rain on the second day, Carr batted patiently with Ramprakash to enable Middlesex to decalre behind and then fed Somerset cheap runs. After taking the catch, Haynes dominated the batting, accelerat- ing after a slow start, hitting nine fours and two sixes to see Middlesex to a victory they would probably have achieved even had they adhered to the agreed formula.
