Date-stamped : 06 May95 - 06:30 ENG B+H 1993 - Round 1 : SURREY v LANCASHIRE The Oval, 11 May 1993 Lancashire achieved one of the most dramatic one-day victories of all time after the Surrey innings went from the sublime to the farcical. They were only 25 runs short of victory thanks to a 212-run partnership between Stewart and Thorpe; then they con- trived to lose nine wickets for just 18 runs - and the match. Only Lynch, who walked for a leg-side catch by Hegg, could claim not to have thrown his wicket away. The remainder had no excuses. Thorpe`s magnificent three-hour century was wasted, and he lost the Gold Award to Fairbrother, for a fine 87 which help Lan- cashire together. Stewart`s 95 should have been turner into a century; instead the loss of his off-stump began the tumble of wickets. Lynch and Thorpe fell in Wasim Akram`s tenth over; Austin`s medium pace accounted for Ward, Brown and Butcher; Wat- kinson whipped out Waqar Younis, while Bicknell and Boiling were run out. The TCCB used the game for the first experiment in Bri- tain with a third umpire replaying difficult decisions on televi- sion and communicating with his colleagues on the field by two- way radio. But Allan Jones`s only involvement proved that the camera could be as uncertain as the human eye. He was unable to judge whether Wasim Akram should be given run out, and ruled that he should stay. A photograph taken from another angle sug- gested that Wasim Akram had been lucky. Thanks: 1994 Wisden Contributed by cp (help@cricinfo.com)
