The students were contained by some steady bowling; their highest innings was a 50 from Snape, which ended when Smith caught him on the boundary. Taking the catch, Smith gashed his head on an advertising hoarding and went off for stitches. Mid- dleton then batted with the fluency which had earned him selec- tion for England A rather than the disappointing form he showed on the tour, reaching his highest score in the competition, and Hampshire cruised home with 5 overs to spare. It completed a frustrating four days for Combined Universities; friendly games against Middlesex and Northamptonshire, arranged before this fix- ture to compensate them for the abolition of their group matches, had been washed out.
