Date-stamped : 28 May94 - 18:24 Sharjah Tourney: Game 3 India vs Pakistan Played at Sharjah, 15th April, 1994 India Fold up In Match Against Pakistan SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates: April 15 (Reuter) - India blew up a dream start and folded up at a modest total of 219 in their match against arch-foe Pakistan in the one-day Australasia Cup international on Friday. A total in the region of 300 looked within their reach but their middle-order batsmen lost the way while trying to sustain the momentum. And then two run outs put a brake on their run rate which hovered around five plus in the first 25 overs. India failed to complete their quota of 50 overs and were all out in 46 overs. Sachin Tendulkar gave India the kick start with an explosive knock of 73 which contained three sixes and 10 fours. One of the sixes off Pakistan skipper Salim Malik landed in the press box, smashing the scorer's telephone. His stroke-filled innings frustrated the well-known Pakistan opening attack and forced Malik to readjust the field almost after every one of his strokes. Tendulkar, whose 50 came off only 42 balls, earned a reprieve when substitute fielder Ijaz Ahmed dropped him when he was in 41 at gully. He eventually fell to a nice catch taken by Rasit Ali at mid on off spinner Akram Raza. Navjot Singh Sidhu and skipper Mohammed Azharuddin then con- ti- nued to plunder runs with neat placements all round the wicket. India were 155 for three when Azharuddin departed with a well- stuck 29 off 31 balls which included one six and four fours. His departure threw India's innings into chaos as other batsmen panicked in face of a rejuvenated Pakistan attack and In- dia lost their last seven wickets for 63 runs. Sidhu weighed a fine 47 before he edged an Ataur Rehman delivery to wicket keeper Rashid Latif. For Pakistan, who were let down by clumsy fielding, Javed, Reh- man and Malik shared the spoils with two wickets each while Akram, who was hit for six by Tendulkar, returned with a figure of one for 36 off 8.3 overs. It was the day of reckoning for India. And the story that unfold- ed had all the trappings of a horror show. The batting flopped after another brave knock by Tendulkar and the bowling was ruth- lessly exposed as the indians wilted under pressure. In the end what lay confirmed was India's vulnerability while playing away from home and Pakistan's superiority in Sharjah. (from m.n.s) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
