AUS: Domestic Season 1992/93 - South Aust. Season Summary

                  South Australia
South Australia performed to about expectations.
Finishing fifth in the shield and fifth in the Mercantile
Mutual cup. Genrally South Australia's batting showed good
strength however the bowling was insipid, with the only
quality bowler appearing to be Tim May. South Australia
played an astonishing 21 players, especailly for a team that
had only 1 international representative.
Jamie Siddons was simply out standing with 1190 runs
at 66. He was back to the form he had before his jaw was
broken by Merv Hughes, with an exceptional scoring rate.
Former Western Australian Jamie Brayshaw had a good season
with 908 runs at 45 giving the Jamies the quinella. Greg
Blewett who made 834 runs at 39.71 on the way making his
first centuries of what should be a long first class career.
Joe Scuderi and Tim Nielsen whilst making runs did not
display the consistency that they should have, whilst new
opener Noel Fielke was starting to find some form when an
arm injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. Glenn
Bishop's career has probably come to a close after a very
poor season, whilst Peter Sleep bowed out with a modest
season with the bat. Several younger players were tried with
the bat, with only Darren Webber with 550 runs being really
successful. Faull, Hammond and Wright did not play
sufficient games to show much although Faull had been given
a few chances.
There was very little joy for South Australia in the
bowling line up with Tim May clearly a class above the
others. Unfortunately for South Australia he quickly got the
call up for Australia and didn't play for most of the
season. The only bowler ahead of him on average was leg
spinner Peter McIntyre who's figures were boosted by 6 for
43 against an England A team that showed against David
Freedman that playing spin was not their strong point. The
only other bowler to average below forty was Damien Reeves
with 22 wickets. However he lacks penetration. Peter Sleep's
only major wicket bag was 7 for 79 in his final game against
Western Australia, otherwise for a player selected as a
bowler his performance was poor. Two pace bowlers Denis
Hickey and Brad Wigney also failed to perform up to any
significance, and a third Joe Scuderi was struggling to take
a wicket a match as he managed the astonishing average of
76.89. It took him an incredible 22 overs for each wicket.
Clearly South Australia need to search for bowlers. Where
will they find them ? Who knows?
