Allan Border, the Australia captain, said the eleventh place in the side would go to Mike Whitney, Tony Dodemaide or Shane Warne. Sri Lanka are in two minds whether they should retain Romesh Kaluwitharana, the wicketkeeper. Craig McDermott removed Hathurusinghe and Gurusinha with suc- cessive deliveries in his third over but Mahanama and Aravinda de Silva hit back with an enterprising 107-run partnership before De Silva was bowled by Dodemaide for 58, made in two hours. Five runs later, Mahanama was trapped leg-before by Matthews, immedi- ately after completing his third half-century of the series. Ranatunga and Tillekeratne then stayed together until the close, although the latter appeared fortunate to be given the benefit of the doubt when Healy appealed for a stumping off Matthews. Healy had reached 71, his highest Test score, as the last two Australian first-innings wickets added 50 after the resumption had been delayed for an hour by rain. His partnership with Warne was ended by Ramanayake, who finished with five for 82. Earlier, Sri Lanka ad- ded 59 runs to their overnight score of 215 for four before de- claring 63 runs behind Australia`s first-innings total of 337.
