Date-stamped : 24 Sep94 - 10:32 Reinstated as captain of Sri Lanka, Arjuna Ranatunga accomp- lished the first of his tasks successfully when he won the toss, but his decision to ask Australia to bat first appeared unwise as Moody and Taylor began with a partnership of 109. The Australians continued to score freely and reached a commen- dable 247, with Mark Taylor hitting his highest score in a limited-over international. Sri Lanka began badly, losing both openers for 12, but Arvinda de Silva was at his most brilliant. He dominated a third-wicket stand of 147 with Gurusinha and made his highest score in a limited-over international. It was his second century in this form of cricket, and the first by a Sri Lankan batsman against Australia. Arvinda de Silva hit 2 sixes and 12 fours and seemed to have put Sri Lanka in reach of victory. The quick loss of Atapattu and Kaluwitharana placed the pressure on Ranatunga, for 34 were needed from the last three overs. The Sri Lankan skipper responded by hitting McDermott for 20 in the 48th over, including 2 sixes, and his 45 off 49 balls won the game for his side in the last over. Not surprisingly de Silva was named Man of the Match for his 102-ball innings. Source : Benson and Hedges - Cricket Year Contributed by nayak (adiking@*.bradley.edu)
