Date-stamped : 27 May95 - 14:24 SS: WESTERN AUSTRALIA v TASMANIA Played at Perth, 10-12 January 1982. Result: Western Australia won by 5 wickets. Tasmania`s chances of a high finish in the Sheffield Shield were heavily dependant on success in this game which, because of Test calls, was against virtually a Western Australian second eleven. However, although at one stage it seemed possible that they might escape with a draw, they never looked like winning. After batting first for a laborious 234, Tasmania did well to restrict W.A. to a lead of only 94. Tasmania`s second innings was even more depressing than their first; of their recognised batsmen only Jeffery made runs, the rest finding the spinners, Mann and Hogan, too good for them. At 159 for nine and only 65 ahead, Tasmania looked beaten, but a tenth-wicket partnership between Saunders and Clough added 120 in three hours with Saunders scoring his maiden first-class century. This unexpected defiance left Western Australia a target of 186 runs at about a run a minute, which they achieved fairly comfort- ably. Contributed by J.R.F.Evans (en92jrfe@exeter.ac.uk)
