Date-stamped : 15 May94 - 02:30 India vs. Leicestershire Leicester, July 7,8,9 - Match drawn A green pitch gave the Indians high-order batsmen a torrid time, but nothing like the one Leicestershire experienced in their first innings when Ghavri broke through with sheer pace to take five wickets. He also hit Steele on the head with a rearing delivery and generally posed many problems. The tourists had to thank Armanath and Kapil Dev for the respectability of their first innings after eight wickets had fallen for 198. Armanath displayed good technique and included one 6 and five 4's in his attractive 73. Leicestershire paid the penalty for some poor stroke-play, notably by Balderstone who was bowled by a full toss. However, he made up for it when the county fol- lowed on 201 behind. His not out century not only saved the match but also provided the Indians with some awkward moments be- fore the match ended in a draw. Balderstone's 122 included eleven boundaries and enabled Tolchard to set the Indians 172 in 90 minutes. What looked a token gesture became serious business as they lost three wickets for 35 before Chauhan and Pa- tel averted further calamity. Contributed by cp (help@cricinfo.com)
