Date-stamped : 15 May94 - 02:29 India vs Gloucestershire July 21, 22, 23 at Bristol - Gloucs won by 7 wickets Gloucs became the first county team to defeat the touring side, although they were in danger of having to follow on early on Sun- day afternoon, the second day of the match. A recovery launched by Bainbridge and Partridge was carried through in such resolute fashion that Gloucs won with 17 overs of the last 20 to spare. The Indians again showed their susceptibility to accurate, per- sistent fast bowling and Procter took 7 for 13 in their second innongs. Gavaskar hit one 6 and six 4's in his 116, and he and Vengsarkar added 160 in two hours 20 minutes for the second wick- et. With the exception of Brain and Procter, the Gloucestershire bowlers offered little threat. Three county wickets had gone for 40 by the close of the first day, and when Gloucs were 91 for 6 an Indian triumph looked certain. Then Bainbridge and Partridge put on 116, Bainbridge being denied a possible maiden century when Procter declared. This proved a shrewd move, for in worsen- ing light the Indians were in trouble at 14 for 3. The light was again indifferent on the third morning and the Indian batting was likewise. Procter allowed them no respite, bowling below full pace but to a testong length and line. Only Gavaskar, batting at number seven, Yashpal and Ghavri of- fered serious resistance. Gloucestershire's early batting order coped comfortably in chas- ing the 201 to win and Procter fin- ished the game with two 6's off Chauhan. It was Gloucestershire's first three-day win at head- quarters since August 1974. Contributed by cp (help@cricinfo.com)
