Date-stamped : 06 Aug94 - 18:28 CC : Worcestershire vs Glamorgan played at Swansea, 30 June, 1,2 July 1977 Ahhh, those were the days! A terrible Worcester side scraping a living at the bottom of the table. The great Glenn Turner being our only consolation, while the immortal Dolly didn't distinguish himself on this occasion. The rest of the Worcester team was notable mainly for containing many professional footballers: Jim Cumbes, Phil Neale, and (my memory's going) either Ted Hemsley or Paul Pridgeon or both. Phil Neale was a successful striker for Lincoln City under the watchful management of one Graham Taylor. Jim Cumbes must have been a nightwatchman, but made third highest score. Second highest was another tail ender, Norman Gifford, who made 7 in a partnership of 57, I see. D.N. Patel is the same cricketer who has been playing for New Zealand. He is one of recent cricket's most genuine exports. He married a New Zealander after playing there for several years. He looks like the only survivor of that Worcester team to still be playing first class cricket. Vanburn Holder is now a first class umpire, by the way, in England. And Malcolm Nash's claim to fame is not of course helping demolish Worcs that day, but as the man who not only conceded Gary Sobers' six sixes in an over in 1968, but who went on to concede 34 runs in an over when Frank Hayes went after him. He wasn't even that bad a bowler. Contributed by Ian.Gent (ipg@aifh.ed.ac.uk)
