Date-stamped : 02 Jul95 - 14:26 Tour match: WARWICKSHIRE v WEST INDIES Played at Birmingham, 7-9 August 1957 Warwickshire, the only county to beat the West Indies in 1950, were making a great effort to repeat that performance when rain ruined the final stages by preventing play on the last day. A bold innings of 98 by Horner, who hit eleven 4s gave Warwickshire a fine start, but they broke down before Ramadhin, the last seven wickets falling for 19 runs. Rohan Kanhai also showed the value of enterprising methods and with one 6 and eleven 4s as his chief strokes he made 74 out of 112 in eighty-five minutes. On the second morning, Gilchrist, with 24446, punished his fellow- countryman Griffiths for 20 off five consecutive balls, but Hol- lies bowled his leg-breaks with such effect that West Indies` lead was confined to 28. Then Stewart and Smith by skillful bat- ting and quick running between the wickets made a valuable third wicket stand of 82 for the county, but Ramadhin trapped both. The game had reached an intriguing position by Thursday evening when the weather intervened. Source: Wisden 1958. Contributed by J.R.F.Evans (en92jrfe@exeter.ac.uk)
